The Opportunity:

As an Assistant Head of Year, you will play a key role in supporting the academic and personal development of students. This is a vital position that requires strong leadership, organisational skills, and a genuine passion for helping young people thrive in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and support the pastoral care needs of students across the school.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Deliver high-quality support in areas such as mental wellbeing, SMEH, and SEND.
  • Organise and lead group sessions for students, including assemblies and pastoral meetings.
  • Collaborate with teaching and support staff to ensure a cohesive and effective learning environment.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in both academic and personal development.
  • Ensure the implementation of school policies and procedures related to student welfare and behaviour.
  • Monitor and report on student progress and wellbeing on a regular basis.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grade 9-4/A*-C.
  • Proven experience working with young people in an educational setting.
  • Experience providing mental wellbeing, SMEH, SEND or counselling support to students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with students and staff in both large and small group settings.

Preferred

  • Experience in a leadership or management role within education.
  • Knowledge of pastoral care and student welfare frameworks.
  • Experience in developing and delivering leadership programmes or character education.
  • Familiarity with Star Academies’ values and mission.
