The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Deputy Head of English to lead and inspire a committed team of passionate educators. This role is central to shaping a dynamic and impactful English department that empowers students through a mastery of language and a rich literary curriculum.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the English department in delivering a high-quality, knowledge-rich curriculum.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student outcomes and attainment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistent, high-impact teaching and learning practices.
  • Oversee the planning, delivery, and assessment of English lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development for English teachers.
  • Work closely with senior leadership to align departmental goals with school-wide priorities.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that teaching practices reflect the school’s commitment to a traditional, interactive, and knowledge-based approach.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience as a classroom practitioner with a track record of strong student outcomes.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and develop a department.
  • In-depth knowledge of English curriculum and pedagogy at Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Experience in leading and supporting teaching staff.
  • Commitment to a traditional, interactive teaching approach.

Preferred

  • Experience in curriculum development and resource creation.
  • Familiarity with Rosenshine’s principles and Doug Lemov’s ‘Teach Like A Champion’.
  • Experience with whole-class feedback and low-stakes assessment strategies.
  • Background in collaborative planning and shared resource development.
  • Experience in working within a multi-academy trust or similar partnership.
