The Opportunity:

This is an opportunity to shape a school's pastoral strategy and safeguarding culture at the highest level. As Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Designated Safeguarding Lead, you will play a central role in promoting a supportive, safe, and inclusive environment for all students and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the school’s pastoral strategy, ensuring it aligns with the school’s vision and values.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership in safeguarding, ensuring robust systems and procedures are in place.
  • Support the Headmaster in managing the Senior Leadership Team and fostering a culture of care and responsibility.
  • Oversee the wellbeing of students, including the management of boarding and day pupil pastoral systems.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with external agencies and stakeholders to ensure effective safeguarding partnerships.
  • Ensure that all staff are trained and confident in safeguarding practices and procedures.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of pastoral care and safeguarding initiatives across the school.
  • Promote a positive school culture that supports the emotional and social development of students.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role within education, ideally in a school setting.
  • Experience as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or similar role, with a deep understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • A commitment to student wellbeing, pastoral care, and fostering a positive school culture.
  • Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Preferred

  • Experience in a co-educational and boarding school environment.
  • Knowledge of child protection legislation and best practice in safeguarding.
  • Experience in developing and leading pastoral care strategies.
  • A background in education leadership with a focus on inclusion and community building.
