Director of English sought to lead and enhance the school's English Department with outstanding outcomes.

The Opportunity:

As the Director of English, you will lead the school’s English Department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning across all key stages. This role is pivotal in driving academic excellence and shaping the future of student achievement in the subject area.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee student progress and development in English across KS3, KS4, and post-16, ensuring targets are met.
  • Ensure high standards of teaching and learning through continuous development and enhancement of pedagogy.
  • Deliver a broad, balanced, and relevant curriculum aligned with the school’s aims and policies.
  • Implement and enforce school policies and procedures consistently across the department.
  • Oversee the effective delivery of the tutor programme and ensure tutors are performing effectively.
  • Promote effective behaviour for learning throughout the faculty.
  • Manage and deploy teaching, support staff, and resources efficiently across the subject area.
  • Lead literacy development through the WORD strategy to raise standards across the school.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent and a good, relevant undergraduate degree.
  • Minimum of two years’ teaching experience with proven success in raising student achievement.
  • Experience in leading others and ensuring high-quality performance.
  • Demonstrated experience in monitoring, evaluating, and reviewing processes to improve teaching and learning.
  • Strong ICT skills and experience in using technology to enhance student achievement.
  • Recent involvement in innovative curriculum development.
  • Experience in presenting to diverse audiences, including teachers, students, and parents.
  • Understanding of creative whole school strategies for improving literacy and numeracy.
  • Experience in leading cross-subject initiatives that contribute to raising achievement.
  • Experience in implementing innovative strategies for Assessment for Learning and Learning to Learn.
  • Recent experience in managing and implementing change at subject leader level.
  • Commitment to using coaching as a model for professional development.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading a large department or faculty.
  • Experience in developing and managing staff teams effectively.
  • Experience in leading whole-school improvement initiatives.
  • Experience in working with external stakeholders and partners.
  • Experience in leading professional development and training programmes.
