The Opportunity:

As Financial Controller, you will lead the financial operations of a dynamic and mission-driven institution. This role is ideal for an experienced professional looking to combine strategic vision with hands-on delivery, ensuring robust financial governance and enabling key investment decisions that shape the future of the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the school’s financial operations, ensuring full compliance with charity law, VAT legislation, and internal governance.
  • Prepare accurate management and statutory accounts in line with FRS102 and SORP, delivering clear and timely reports to the Trustees.
  • Manage VAT compliance under PESM and the Capital Goods Scheme, liaising with HMRC and representing the school during inspections.
  • Oversee treasury management and maintain strong banking relationships.
  • Drive and manage the annual audit process, ensuring strong internal controls and compliance.
  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team of five, fostering a high-performing culture of collaboration and excellence.
  • Deliver financial insights and modelling to support strategic projects and income diversification across the school.
  • Act as a trusted partner to the Finance Director, contributing to strategic planning and operational delivery.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualified (or equivalent).
  • Strong technical knowledge of charity accounting and VAT legislation.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with finance systems.
  • Proven leadership experience with the ability to inspire and develop a team.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred

  • Experience in charity accounting and VAT compliance within a complex organisation.
  • Experience with financial modelling and strategic planning.
