The Opportunity:
As the Head of English, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of English and Literacy at a leading institution. This is an opportunity to lead a dynamic department and inspire students through a curriculum that values creativity, critical thinking, and academic rigour.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop the English department, focusing on KS3–KS4 with strategic oversight of transition from KS2.
- Oversee curriculum development and ensure a culture of excellence in reading, writing, oracy, and critical thinking.
- Collaborate with the Leadership Team to implement a clear vision and drive organisational improvements.
- Promote the school’s core values—Respect, Integrity, Confidence, Positivity, and Empathy—across all levels of the school.
- Lead and contribute to the Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) programme, including running key activity blocks.
- Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and pupil wellbeing, ensuring compliance with all procedures.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the English department.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required
- Proven leadership experience in a school setting, ideally within English or Literacy.
- Strong track record in curriculum development and delivery across KS3–KS4.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and support staff.
- Commitment to safeguarding and pupil wellbeing, with experience in modelling high standards of care and professionalism.
- Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and challenge students to achieve excellence in literacy and personal expression.
Preferred
- Experience in leading and managing a department with a focus on whole-school strategy.
- Background in public speaking, debate, creative writing, or literary appreciation.
- Experience with extra-curricular activities, including debating, drama, or book clubs.
- Familiarity with British education systems and curricula.
