The Opportunity:

The Head of History will lead a thriving department, delivering an inspiring and academically rigorous curriculum across multiple year groups. This role offers the chance to shape the future of history education, including the development of a new pre-prep curriculum and the adaptation of existing schemes for a co-educational setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the History department, ensuring academic excellence and student engagement.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across Years 3 to 8, including preparation for Scholarship examinations.
  • Contribute to the Department Development Plan and work closely with the Assistant Master - Teaching and Learning.
  • Design and implement a chronologically based curriculum that caters to all pupils, including high achievers and those with special educational needs.
  • Support the transition to a co-educational environment by adapting current schemes of work and developing new curriculum content for Reception to Year 2.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in teaching and learning.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience as a Head of Department or in a senior teaching role.
  • Strong subject knowledge in History with a passion for teaching and inspiring students.
  • Experience in curriculum development and the ability to create engaging, academically robust lesson plans.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team of teachers effectively.
  • Experience working with pupils of all abilities, including those with special educational needs.

Preferred

  • Experience with scholarship and selective school admissions.
  • Familiarity with co-educational environments and curriculum development.
  • Experience in leading departmental initiatives and contributing to school-wide strategic planning.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with colleagues and parents.
