The Opportunity:

As the Head of Horticulture, you will lead the gardens team and play a vital role in shaping the visual and ecological character of the school's extensive grounds. This position is ideal for an experienced professional looking to make a meaningful impact on the conservation and enhancement of a beautiful and historic landscape.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead the gardens team to ensure the maintenance and conservation of the school's extensive grounds.
  • Develop and implement seasonal and weather-dependent work schedules to maintain the gardens and woodland areas.
  • Monitor and manage the preservation of trees and other natural features across the site.
  • Oversee gardens improvement projects that align with the school's environmental sustainability goals.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are conducted with minimal environmental impact.
  • Promote and enforce health and safety standards across all gardening operations.
  • Operate and maintain gardening machinery and equipment to a high standard.
  • Motivate and support staff to maintain a positive and productive working environment.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in gardens management and horticulture.
  • RHS Level 3+ qualification and IOSH Managing Safely certification.
  • ILM Level 3 or equivalent qualification.
  • Strong understanding of working in conservation areas and AONB’s.
  • Excellent knowledge of health and safety practices.
  • Proficiency in the operation and maintenance of gardening machinery.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team effectively.

Preferred

  • Experience in managing large-scale gardens or grounds in a conservation area.
  • Knowledge of environmental sustainability practices.
  • Experience in developing and implementing seasonal garden plans.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills.
