Job Description

Summary:

School Counsellor - Maternity Cover role available at a school in August 2025.

About the School:

A school dedicated to educational excellence and inclusivity, offering a supportive learning environment for students from nursery through secondary education.

The Opportunity:

A School Counsellor is needed to support students’ social, emotional, and academic well-being. This role involves providing targeted intervention, counselling, and guidance to students, while working closely with teachers, parents, and external agencies to ensure a safe and supportive school environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individual and group counselling sessions to support students with SEMH needs.
  • Utilise evidence-based therapeutic approaches to promote student well-being and personal development.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external services to support student needs and maintain confidentiality.
  • Advocate for student voice and well-being through proactive and preventative mental health support.
  • Identify and refer students to external support services for specialist care when necessary.
  • Work with pastoral leads to support whole school well-being initiatives and deliver well-being content.
  • Respond promptly to student crises, including bullying, self-harm, or trauma, and coordinate appropriate interventions.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions and student progress.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Degree qualification in psychology, counselling, or a similar field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience providing well-being and mental health support to children and young people, preferably in a school setting.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding laws, policies, and procedures in the UK and UAE.
  • Ability to work with male, hard to reach students.

Preferred

  • Emotionally intelligent with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management abilities.
  • Experience with CBT, solution-focused, and strength-based approaches to counselling.
  • Understanding of diversity across cultural, religious, and gender backgrounds.
