The Opportunity:

As a SEN Teacher, you will play a vital role in supporting students aged 11–16 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) through a nurturing and inclusive approach. You will help students access the national curriculum in a way that works for them and achieve meaningful vocational qualifications by the time they leave school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to students’ educational, physical, and social needs using short, medium, and long-term planning.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, contributing to meetings and maintaining effective communication with staff and leadership.
  • Set, monitor, and review personalised learning targets; assess and report on student progress to stakeholders.
  • Develop and evaluate lesson plans, incorporating self-reflection and curriculum developments.
  • Contribute to EHC plans, PEPs, and LAC reviews; manage behaviour positively in line with school policy.
  • Stay informed on autism and inclusive education to enhance teaching effectiveness.
  • Support the overall aims of the school when required, including contributing to curriculum development and student support initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment that promotes student well-being and progress.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience in special school settings, particularly with pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • Proven ability to deliver a differentiated curriculum to meet diverse learning needs
  • Strong knowledge of the national curriculum
  • Working understanding of ASC and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including complex presentations

Preferred

  • Specialism in Science
  • Additional qualifications in SEND
  • Experience in curriculum development for learners with SEND, especially those with autism
  • Understanding of co-occurring conditions associated with autism and their impact on learning
