Job Description

Summary:

Teaching Assistant role available at a school committed to supporting students with autism and complex needs.

About the School:

The school provides specialist education for young people on the autistic spectrum, aged 8 to 19, who may also have challenging behaviour due to communication difficulties and social understanding.

The Opportunity:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students across all key stages. You will work closely with class teachers to assist students in their learning, manage behaviour, and provide individualised support. Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students in their learning and help them achieve their full potential.
  • Assist with the movement of students to and from college and educational visits.
  • Manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour using positive approaches.
  • Build strong, positive relationships with students and colleagues.
  • Provide individualised support tailored to students' specific needs.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and other support staff to create a safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Follow school policies and procedures related to behaviour management and safeguarding.
  • Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • A good knowledge of autism and experience working in an SEN setting, preferably with students on the autistic spectrum.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with young people.
  • Highly organised, adaptable, and proactive with a strong sense of responsibility.
  • High levels of resilience, compassion, and patience.
  • A full, clean driving licence for transporting students and participating in educational visits.
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and/or Team Teach approaches.
  • Experience in supporting students with ADHD, PDA, or co-occurring mental health needs.
  • Previous experience in a school or educational setting.
