Teaching Assistant job with a focus on autism and SEND support.

The Opportunity:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting children with autism and social, emotional, and mental health needs. You will help them learn, develop their abilities, and build self-esteem through meaningful interactions and tailored support. Key Responsibilities:

  • Support children with autism and social, emotional, and mental health needs in a classroom setting.
  • Assist in delivering individualised and accessible learning experiences tailored to each pupil’s needs.
  • Communicate effectively with non-verbal students using tools such as Makaton, PECs, and PODD.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to support pupils’ development and behaviour management.
  • Promote positive learning experiences through fun, engaging, and inclusive activities.
  • Help manage and understand challenging behaviour by identifying its function and supporting positive outcomes.
  • Be flexible and adaptable in working with children aged 4 to 11 years.
  • Think creatively and use innovative strategies to support learning and engagement.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Experience working with children who are autistic and have social, emotional, and mental health needs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-verbal pupils using visual and alternative communication systems.
  • Experience managing and supporting challenging behaviour in a classroom setting.
  • Flexibility to work with children across a wide age range (4–11 years).
  • Knowledge of autism strategies such as TEACCH and Attention Autism, and the ability to apply them in practice.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a classroom or educational setting.
  • Training or experience in special educational needs and disability (SEND) support.
  • Familiarity with alternative communication tools such as PODD and PECs.
  • Strong interpersonal and team-working skills.
  • Passion for education and making a positive impact on young people’s lives.
