The Opportunity:

This Trainee Counsellor role offers valuable hands-on experience working with 11–18-year-old students in a supportive and therapeutic environment. The position is ideal for Counselling or Psychotherapy students looking to gain practical skills while contributing to the well-being of young people.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with personal, social, and emotional well-being through individual and group sessions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students and colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to promote student mental health and resilience.
  • Attend fortnightly supervision sessions to reflect on practice and receive guidance.
  • Document sessions and maintain accurate records in line with safeguarding and data protection policies.
  • Participate in school events and contribute to the development of pastoral care strategies.
  • Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students, respecting diversity and promoting positive behavior.
  • Assist in the delivery of targeted support programs aimed at improving student outcomes.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Currently enrolled in a Counselling or Psychotherapy course.
  • Ability to work with young people and handle confidential matters sensitively.
  • Commitment to student well-being and personal development.
  • Minimum of 4 clinical hours per week, with availability for one day per week, term-time only.
  • Completion of safer recruitment checks prior to starting the placement.

Preferred

  • Experience in working with secondary school-aged students.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic techniques and approaches.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with safeguarding and child protection procedures.
