The Opportunity:

As the Deputy Head (Pastoral) and DSL, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safeguarding, wellbeing, and safety of all pupils. This is a senior leadership position that requires a strong focus on pastoral care, with responsibility for leading the welfare team and fostering a culture of kindness and resilience across the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the safeguarding, wellbeing, and safety of pupils across all age groups.
  • Oversee the work of the welfare team, including school counsellors, nurses, ELSAs, and DDSLs.
  • Develop and implement effective wellbeing and safeguarding programmes that support the emotional and social development of pupils.
  • Maintain open and supportive communication with parents and families to ensure a positive approach to pupil wellbeing.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff on pastoral matters and safeguarding procedures.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to any safeguarding concerns or incidents.
  • Work closely with the Headmistress and Senior Leadership Team to ensure consistency in pastoral and academic policies.
  • Promote a culture of kindness, respect, and resilience throughout the school community.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in a senior leadership role within education, with a focus on pastoral care and safeguarding.
  • In-depth knowledge of safeguarding procedures and best practices.
  • Strong people management and leadership skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and make timely, informed decisions.
  • A commitment to the school’s ethos and values, including Christian principles.

Preferred

  • Experience in a DSL role within a school setting.
  • Experience in a boarding or independent school environment.
  • Background in child development or related field.
  • Strong understanding of wellbeing initiatives and mental health support for children.
