Summary:

Head of Modern Foreign Languages – Lead a dynamic MFL department and drive excellence in teaching and learning.

The Opportunity:

As Head of Modern Foreign Languages, you will lead and inspire a high-performing department, shaping the strategic direction of MFL and driving excellence in teaching and learning. This role offers the opportunity to influence curriculum design, raise attainment, and foster a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Modern Foreign Languages department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all ability levels.
  • Develop and implement an ambitious curriculum, with a focus on raising attainment and securing sustained progress.
  • Monitor and use data effectively to evaluate teaching and learning outcomes and drive continuous improvement.
  • Line manage and develop colleagues, providing support and guidance to enhance teaching practice and performance.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders, pastoral teams, and the SENCO to ensure provision meets the needs of all learners and safeguarding remains a priority.
  • Manage departmental resources and build strong links with partner primary schools to support curriculum continuity.
  • Promote the value of languages in preparing students for future success and wider opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in secondary teaching and middle leadership within a school setting.
  • Strong track record in delivering outstanding GCSE outcomes in Modern Foreign Languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a department with a clear vision for improvement.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and the holistic development of students.

Preferred

  • Experience in curriculum development and innovation within MFL.
  • Experience with teaching English as a Second Language or other language-related qualifications.
  • Experience in working with a multi-academy trust or similar educational structure.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire both students and staff.
