Pastoral Lead role at a school in Berkshire. Support student wellbeing and behaviour with strategic leadership.

About the School:

A school dedicated to providing a nurturing, structured environment for autistic young people aged 4–16. Small classes and high staff-to-pupil ratios ensure individualised support and growth.

The Opportunity:

The Pastoral Lead role is pivotal in fostering a positive, inclusive school culture. This position supports the wellbeing, behaviour, and development of students, ensuring they thrive academically and socially. The role requires strong leadership and collaboration with staff, families, and external agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and coordination of the pastoral team.
  • Support the welfare, personal development, and behaviour of all pupils.
  • Ensure consistent implementation of school policies and model effective pastoral intervention.
  • Provide flexible support to staff and pupils throughout the school day.
  • Contribute to the implementation and review of Positive Support Plans and Risk Assessments.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, carers, and external agencies.
  • Record and analyse behaviour incidents, providing weekly reports to inform intervention strategies.
  • Manage escalating behaviour and lead debriefs following incidents involving Restrictive Physical Intervention.
  • Identify pastoral resource needs and advise leadership on priorities for expenditure.
  • Maintain and develop existing pastoral resources from internal and external sources.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience working with students with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Special Educational Needs (SEN), and complex needs.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering targeted pastoral interventions and leading whole-school initiatives.
  • Strong pastoral leadership experience within a school setting.
  • Clear understanding of strategies to support student wellbeing and emotional regulation.

Preferred

  • Experience with Positive Support Plans and Risk Assessments.
  • Experience in managing and leading staff debriefs following incidents.
  • Familiarity with Restrictive Physical Intervention (RPI) and its appropriate use.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
