Salary will be competitive and dependent upon experience. Sherborne Schools Group operates its own salary scale. Salary will be paid monthly in arrears directly into a nominated bank account. Reasonable relocation expenses will be offered.

The Opportunity:

As a Choral Director, you will lead and develop a well-established choral programme that is central to the school’s identity. This role offers the opportunity to direct choirs, shape music for services in a historic abbey, and work with talented and dedicated students in a setting that values both excellence and participation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct and lead a range of choirs, including the School Choir and Chamber Choir.
  • Shape and prepare music for regular services in a historic abbey and other performances throughout the year.
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Music and the wider department.
  • Support and develop talented students with strong choral backgrounds.
  • Work with regular accompanists and use excellent facilities to deliver high-quality musical experiences.
  • Manage a part-time schedule with a focus on evenings and Sundays.
  • Engage in a musical life that is both ambitious and central to the school’s identity.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in choral direction and leadership.
  • Strong musical background and experience in directing choirs.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to high standards of musical performance and participation.
  • Flexibility to work part-time with a focus on evenings and Sundays.

Preferred

  • Experience in a school or church choral setting.
  • Knowledge of liturgical music and performance practice.
  • Experience with boys’ choirs or choral training.
  • Ability to combine this role with other musical work, such as teaching or church roles.
