Summary:

Higher Level Teaching Assistant - Mentoring role with SEND support and pastoral responsibilities.

The Opportunity:

As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), while also contributing to the overall learning experience. This position includes a specific focus on mentoring and pastoral support, ensuring that students receive the individualised attention they need to thrive academically and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the teaching of children by assisting with classroom activities, administration, supervision, and care duties.
  • Deliver learning and interventions to individuals, small groups, and classes, adapting activities to meet pupils’ needs.
  • Provide day-to-day operational support within the SEND Department, working closely with the SENDCo and teaching staff.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupils’ progress, using this information to enhance their learning and development.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of pupil progress, interventions, and provision.
  • Develop and implement support plans, including Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and Pupil Passports.
  • Build and maintain meaningful one-to-one mentoring relationships with students with SEND needs.
  • Liaise with teachers, parents, and external professionals to ensure consistent support for pupils.
  • Support pupils during transitions, such as returning from absence or moving between lessons.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Experience working in a secondary school environment.
  • Qualified HLTA status.
  • Familiarity with the national curriculum.
  • Experience of running successful interventions for SEND/SEMH.

Preferred

  • Experience in mentoring students with specific SEND needs.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and external professionals.
  • Knowledge of statutory SEND documentation and procedures.
