The Opportunity:

As a School Counsellor, you will provide essential emotional and psychological support to students, helping them navigate challenges and thrive academically and personally. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide confidential one-to-one counselling to students, addressing emotional, social, and academic challenges.
  • Work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead, pastoral leaders, and external agencies to ensure student safety and wellbeing.
  • Deliver small-group therapeutic sessions and mental health training to staff and students where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and secure records of student interactions and progress.
  • Collaborate with school nurses and other support staff to develop holistic care plans for students.
  • Stay up to date with best practices in child and adolescent mental health.
  • Participate in staff meetings and contribute to the development of school-wide wellbeing initiatives.
  • Support students in building resilience, coping strategies, and emotional awareness.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Recognised counselling or psychotherapy qualification (e.g., from BACP or UKCP).
  • Experience working therapeutically with children and young people.
  • Strong safeguarding awareness and ability to handle sensitive situations professionally and empathetically.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Experience in a school or education setting.

Preferred

  • Experience leading small-group work or delivering mental health training.
  • Familiarity with pastoral care systems in an educational environment.
  • Knowledge of child development and mental health best practices.
