The Opportunity:

As the Head of Philosophy, Religion and Ethics, you will lead a department committed to inspiring critical thinking and respectful dialogue. This role offers the chance to shape a curriculum that challenges students to explore complex questions about belief, morality, and identity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop a vibrant, inclusive and rigorous department of Philosophy, Religion and Ethics.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching and learning that engages students in critical thinking and ethical reasoning.
  • Foster a culture of respect, inclusivity and intellectual curiosity within the department.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the school to integrate PRE into broader academic and personal development goals.
  • Support students in developing their understanding of philosophical, religious and ethical issues through engaging and thought-provoking lessons.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, ensuring the delivery of a curriculum that meets the highest standards.
  • Represent the department in school-wide meetings and contribute to the development of the school’s strategic vision.
  • Mentor and support departmental colleagues, encouraging professional development and collaboration.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • A strong academic background in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics, with relevant teaching qualifications.
  • Proven experience in leading a department and driving high standards in teaching and learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, colleagues and parents.
  • A commitment to fostering an inclusive and respectful learning environment.
  • Demonstrable ability to design and deliver a challenging and engaging curriculum.

Preferred

  • Experience in a similar leadership role within a school or educational institution.
  • A passion for philosophy, religion and ethics, with a commitment to helping students engage critically with big questions.
  • Experience in working with diverse student groups and promoting inclusivity and respect.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
