The Opportunity:

As a Teaching Assistant in Alternative Provision, you will support students facing barriers to learning, particularly those with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to make a lasting impact on young people's educational journeys and life outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students in developing emotional regulation, resilience, and confidence to engage in learning.
  • Work closely with students, families, teaching staff, and external professionals to provide holistic support.
  • Deliver targeted interventions and learning strategies tailored to individual student needs.
  • Assist in planning and running Alternative Provision activities and programs.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students and maintain a calm, reflective approach in challenging situations.
  • Monitor and report on student progress and well-being regularly.
  • Collaborate with the teaching team to ensure consistency in support and learning outcomes.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Relevant experience supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and SEMH needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students and work effectively in a team.
  • Commitment to inclusion and the belief that all young people can achieve success with the right support.
  • Experience working in a school or educational setting.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting students with dysregulated behaviour or emotionally based school avoidance.
  • Experience in Alternative Provision or similar settings.
  • Knowledge of strategies to support emotional regulation and learning engagement.
  • Experience with teaching or supporting students in non-mainstream educational environments.
