Job Description

Summary:

Teaching Assistant role in SEND school in Wakefield. Support young people with autism and complex needs.

About the School:

A specialist school providing education for young people aged 11 to 19 with complex care needs, including behaviours that challenge and learning disabilities, often in association with autism spectrum conditions.

The Opportunity:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a crucial role in supporting young people with social communication, emotional regulation, and sensory processing needs. You will be a key part of a multi-disciplinary team, helping to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support teachers in delivering a broad and balanced curriculum tailored to individual needs.
  • Help young people build confidence, celebrate their strengths, and develop self-belief.
  • Encourage independence, positive behaviour, and personal development in pupils.
  • Assist in breaking down barriers and supporting pupils to achieve their academic and personal goals.
  • Promote curiosity and a love of learning through creative and engaging activities.
  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual needs and support pupils in both classroom and community settings.
  • Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure a consistent and supportive approach to student development.
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to help pupils reach their full potential.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • GCSE Maths and English qualification (minimum functional skills Level 2).
  • Proactive and can-do mindset with the ability to think outside the box.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire children to believe in themselves.
  • Willingness to take advantage of training opportunities provided by the school.
  • Ability to promote independence, positive behaviour, and personal development.

Preferred

  • Experience in working with young people with autism or complex care needs.
  • Experience in a similar role within the education sector.
  • Demonstrated creativity in adapting learning activities to meet individual needs.
