Summary:

Deputy Head of English needed at a school committed to SEMH provision and inclusive education.

The Opportunity:

As a Deputy Head of English, you will lead curriculum development and deliver high-quality teaching in a specialist SEMH setting. This role is ideal for someone passionate about making a meaningful impact on the lives of young people with complex needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic development and continuous improvement of the English curriculum for all key stages.
  • Model and deliver high-quality English teaching using trauma-informed and autism-informed approaches.
  • Monitor and analyse pupil progress data to drive improved academic outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the SENCo, therapy teams, and SLT to integrate therapeutic strategies into classroom practice.
  • Support whole-school development, including curriculum planning, behaviour systems, and safeguarding.
  • Oversee literacy initiatives such as the school library and Accelerated Reader/Star Reading.
  • Promote pupil welfare and inclusion, potentially acting as a form tutor and engaging with families.
  • Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding and professional conduct in a multidisciplinary SEMH setting.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Experience in educational, childcare, or SEN settings.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage challenging behaviour.
  • A team player with a collaborative mindset and willingness to learn.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading curriculum development or departmental leadership.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed and autism-informed teaching approaches.
  • Experience with EHCP targets, IEPs, and therapeutic strategies.
  • Experience in working with pupils with complex emotional and behavioural needs.
