The Opportunity:

As the Head of English, you will lead the department for Years 5–8, ensuring high standards of teaching, learning, and student progress. This is a key leadership role that offers the opportunity to shape curriculum development and support colleagues in delivering an outstanding education.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and inspire the English department to raise standards of attainment and achievement.
• Support the induction, mentoring, and professional development of staff within the department.
• Oversee and coordinate schemes of work in line with the National Curriculum for England.
• Monitor teaching standards, assessment practices, and pupil progress.
• Promote a culture of reading, writing, critical thinking, and confident communication.
• Ensure cross-curricular links and enrichment opportunities are maximised.
• Analyse pupil performance data and implement strategies for improvement.
• Manage departmental resources and budgets effectively.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

• A recognised teaching qualification (B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE or equivalent).
• A degree in English or a closely related subject.
• Experience teaching English within the British curriculum.
• Proven leadership experience (e.g., Head of English, Key Stage Coordinator or similar).
• Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• A commitment to high standards and continuous school improvement.

Preferred

• Experience teaching in the UK.
• Experience working in an international school setting.
• Experience supporting EAL learners.
