The Opportunity:

As a Grounds Maintenance Officer, you will be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the school’s extensive outdoor estate, including sports grounds, gardens, and landscaped areas. This is a key role in ensuring the campus remains a safe, beautiful, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain lawns, hedges, trees, and planted areas through routine mowing, pruning, weeding, and leaf clearance.
  • Prepare and upkeep sports pitches, including artificial surfaces, in accordance with high standards and seasonal requirements.
  • Assist with sports surface renovations such as aeration, scarification, overseed, and turf repairs.
  • Monitor tree health and report signs of disease, pest damage, or structural concerns to the Head of Grounds.
  • Operate machinery and equipment safely in line with health and safety policies and COSHH regulations.
  • Ensure pathways, hard landscaping, and outdoor furniture are maintained to a safe and presentable standard.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and other departments to support team objectives and site standards.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to deliver planned and reactive maintenance programs.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Grounds maintenance qualification with a minimum of NVQ level 2 equivalence.
  • Full driving license.
  • Practical experience in grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to operate grounds machinery and hand tools.
  • Awareness of health and safety requirements for outdoor work and equipment use.

Preferred

  • PA1 and PA6 pesticide application certificates.
  • Previous experience in sports turf environments.
  • Basic knowledge of plants, turf management, and seasonal maintenance cycles.
