The Opportunity:

As the Head of English, you will lead a dynamic department and inspire a love of literature and language across the school. This role is ideal for an ambitious and passionate educator who is committed to delivering high-quality teaching and shaping the future of English education at the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the delivery of excellence across the English department.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching of English from Year 3 to Year 8, preparing pupils for Common Entrance and scholarship examinations.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive departmental schemes of work and curriculum policies.
  • Liaise closely with the Head of Learning Support and other key colleagues to ensure the needs of all pupils are met.
  • Chair departmental meetings and plan individual and departmental INSET sessions.
  • Oversee departmental budget preparation and ensure effective use of resources.
  • Promote the use of ICT across the English curriculum.
  • Ensure compliance with marking, tracking, and homework policies.
  • Arrange and oversee peer observation within the department.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • A passion for teaching English and a strong academic background in the subject.
  • Excellent classroom practice and up-to-date knowledge of English curriculum developments.
  • Experience with public school admissions, including pre-tests and scholarships.
  • Strong communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ICT skills and the ability to use technology effectively in teaching.
  • Commitment to the welfare and safeguarding of children and young people.
  • A proven track record of teaching and leadership, or emerging leadership potential.
  • A full and active commitment to pastoral care and the school community.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading a department or managing a team.
  • A strong interest in co-curricular activities and school life.
  • Experience in curriculum development and policy creation.
