The Opportunity:
As the Head of English, you will provide strategic leadership for the English curriculum across the entire school, from ages 2 to 13. This role is ideal for an experienced and inspirational educator who is passionate about shaping the future of English education and fostering a love of reading and language in students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and develop a clear, progressive, and effective English curriculum across all age groups.
- Collaborate with the Reading Lead, Head of Pre-Prep English, and Upper School Curriculum Lead to implement a whole-school reading strategy.
- Ensure high standards of teaching, learning, and assessment, with a focus on strong subject knowledge and pupil outcomes.
- Support the development of library spaces and promote a strong reading culture across the school.
- Model and promote the thoughtful use of technology to enhance teaching and learning, while maintaining traditional academic rigour.
- Prepare students for 11+ and 13+ senior school entry, including scholarship-level assessments.
- Contribute to the monitoring, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the curriculum.
- Engage in pastoral responsibilities, including acting as a House Mentor or Form Tutor and participating in residential trips.
Qualifications & Skills:
Required
- A degree in English.
- PGCE with English as the specialist subject (or equivalent teaching qualification).
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Proven experience teaching KS3 English.
- Strong understanding of the 11+ and 13+ senior school entry processes.
- Experience in curriculum leadership or departmental responsibility.
- Willingness to act as a House Mentor or Form Tutor and engage in residential trips.
- Excellent subject knowledge, communication, and organisational skills.
- A clear commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Preferred
- Understanding of or experience in KS1 English.
- Experience of curriculum oversight across multiple age phases.
- Experience preparing pupils for English scholarships.
- Experience within an independent or preparatory school setting.
- Confidence or interest in using technology selectively and purposefully to enhance English teaching and learning.
