The Opportunity:

As the Head of English, you will lead and develop the English department, driving academic excellence and student achievement. This is a pivotal role for someone passionate about education and committed to shaping the future of young minds through impactful teaching and leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and develop the English department to ensure high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Raise student attainment and achievement by monitoring progress and supporting individual learning needs.
  • Deliver a broad, balanced, and differentiated curriculum in line with the school's educational goals.
  • Develop and implement effective teaching strategies, assessment policies, and resource planning.
  • Recruit, train, and manage a motivated and high-performing team of English staff.
  • Act as a form tutor to a group of students, supporting their academic and pastoral needs.
  • Promote a safe and inclusive learning environment that fosters student growth and well-being.
  • Model excellent teaching practices and contribute to the school’s overall mission and values.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a relevant undergraduate degree.
  • Experience of teaching GCSE English at a high standard.
  • Proven ability to manage and lead departmental improvement and change initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success in raising student achievement and attainment.
  • Strong understanding of current curriculum developments and educational best practices.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.

Preferred

  • Management training or experience in a leadership role.
  • Experience with curriculum development and staff training.
  • Knowledge of Teaching English as a Second Language (TEFL) or similar.
