The Opportunity:

As the Head of Science, you will lead the science department and play a key role in shaping a dynamic and engaging learning environment. You will inspire students, develop curriculum content, and contribute to the school’s academic and extracurricular life. Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach science to students across years 3–6 and beyond, fostering intellectual curiosity and engagement.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise the science curriculum, ensuring alignment with school standards and student needs.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse abilities and learning styles of students.
  • Encourage student self-assessment and progress tracking against individual targets.
  • Introduce and teach the proper use of science equipment and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Stay updated on curriculum developments through internal and external training sessions.
  • Maintain a visually stimulating and regularly updated science laboratory display.
  • Lead or develop science-related clubs such as CARE and STEM.
  • Organise and coordinate Science Week activities and other enrichment opportunities.
  • Review and update the Science Policy annually to ensure it reflects best practices and school values.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified teacher (PGCE, QTS or equivalent) with experience teaching science to years 3–6.
  • Strong subject knowledge and the ability to inspire and engage students.
  • Experience in planning, assessment, and adapting work to meet individual needs.
  • Excellent classroom management skills and the ability to maintain a calm, respectful environment.
  • Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and pupil wellbeing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading or contributing to extracurricular science clubs or activities.
  • Experience with science enrichment programs or HLP (High Level Pupil) initiatives.
  • Familiarity with STEM education and related teaching strategies.
