The Opportunity:

We are seeking a motivated and passionate Deputy Head of English to lead and inspire a team of educators. This role is central to shaping the future of English education and driving academic excellence across the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the development of the English department to ensure high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Work closely with the Head of School to implement strategic priorities and improve student outcomes.
  • Oversee curriculum planning, assessment, and monitoring of progress across all key stages.
  • Provide guidance and professional development opportunities for English teachers and support staff.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration within the department.
  • Represent the English department at school-wide meetings and external events.
  • Ensure that safeguarding and child protection policies are upheld at all times.
  • Contribute to the overall leadership and management of the school.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified teacher with extensive experience in English education at both Key Stage 3 and 4.
  • Proven leadership experience in a school or college setting, ideally as a senior leader or head of department.
  • Strong understanding of current educational trends, curriculum development, and assessment practices.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child protection, with the ability to uphold and promote these values.
  • Relevant teaching qualification (e.g., Qualified Teacher Status).

Preferred

  • Experience in leading a large department or team.
  • Experience in a multi-academy trust or similar educational partnership.
  • Experience in managing and developing staff through mentoring and professional development.
  • Experience with school improvement initiatives or Ofsted inspections.
  • Experience with curriculum innovation and the use of technology in teaching and learning.
