The Opportunity:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the English department to ensure high-quality teaching and learning.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student outcomes and raise standards across all key stages.
  • Support and mentor staff to enhance professional development and performance.
  • Collaborate with senior leaders to shape school-wide strategies and initiatives.
  • Deliver effective teaching and learning that inspires students and meets the needs of all learners.
  • Engage with the wider school community to promote the value of English and literacy.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of departmental initiatives and interventions.
  • Ensure that the curriculum is aligned with the school’s vision and educational goals.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in teaching and leading in a secondary school setting.
  • Strong subject knowledge in English and literacy across all key stages.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive up standards and improve student outcomes.
  • Experience in departmental leadership and management.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and improvement.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of the school’s vision and context.

Preferred

  • Experience with IRIS and regular drop-in feedback systems.
  • Experience in a school with a strong focus on pastoral care and student wellbeing.
  • Experience in a school that is part of a learning trust.
  • Experience in leading curriculum development and innovation.
  • Experience in working with diverse student cohorts and supporting student enrichment.
