The Opportunity:

A Functional Literacy and Numeracy Tutor is needed to work with students in the Surbiton area. This role is ideal for experienced tutors who are passionate about working with students with severe SEN and are available during the day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver tailored literacy and numeracy support to students with special educational needs
  • Apply the Bright Heart Approach to build trust, confidence, and academic progress
  • Provide clear, structured lessons that align with individual learning plans
  • Communicate regularly with parents and education consultants to track student progress
  • Attend training and safeguarding workshops to ensure compliance with Bright Heart standards
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and session notes
  • Support students in developing essential life skills and study techniques
  • Adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs and abilities

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • At least 12 months of relevant tutoring or teaching experience in the UK
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Strong subject knowledge in literacy and numeracy
  • Current Enhanced DBS certificate (with children’s barred list check)
  • Ability to work during the daytime
  • Experience working with students with severe special educational needs (SEN)

Preferred

  • Experience with the Bright Heart Approach or similar student-centred methodologies
  • Previous experience in SEN tuition or teaching
  • Familiarity with individual learning plans (ILPs) and SEMH support
  • Experience with online and in-person tutoring
  • Passion for education and making a positive impact on students’ lives
