The Opportunity:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and develop the Classics department, ensuring a high-quality curriculum that meets the needs of all students.
  • Teach Latin at all levels, from beginners to scholarship standard, and support the study of Greek where appropriate.
  • Foster a love of classical languages and cultures through engaging and innovative teaching methods.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to support the academic and personal development of students.
  • Promote the value of Classics within the school and wider community.
  • Ensure that teaching practices align with the school’s ethos and values, including a commitment to inclusion and diversity.
  • Support the professional development of department members and contribute to staff training initiatives.
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school through involvement in co-curricular activities.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with excellent academic credentials.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent (e.g., BA, BEd, PGCE).
  • Strong ICT skills.
  • Commitment to professional development for self and colleagues.
  • Evidence of effective teaching and ability to meet the Teachers’ Standards.

Preferred

  • Postgraduate degree in Classics or a related field.
  • Experience teaching Greek.
  • Experience in a leadership or departmental role.
  • Experience working with students with EAL and SEN needs.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and inspire colleagues and students.
