The Opportunity:

We are seeking a passionate and experienced Head of Classics to lead a dynamic and specialist department. This role offers the chance to shape the future of classical education and inspire students across all key stages. The ideal candidate will be an excellent practitioner with a commitment to widening access to classical subjects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Classics department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across KS3, KS4, and KS5.
  • Deliver and develop the Latin, Classical Civilisation, and Ancient History curriculum, including GCSE and A-Level courses.
  • Support the teaching of Oracy and contribute to cross-curricular initiatives.
  • Supervise and mentor trainee teachers and support staff within the department.
  • Organise and lead educational trips, including biannual study tours to Italy and Greece.
  • Promote the department’s extracurricular activities, including the Classics Club and Classical Greek offerings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Faculty of Linguistic and Cultural Studies to enhance student outcomes.
  • Continuously improve teaching practice through professional development and whole-school initiatives.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience teaching Classics and Latin at KS3-4, with experience at KS5 highly desirable.
  • Strong pedagogical knowledge and a commitment to inclusive teaching.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.
  • Experience of teaching in a UK secondary school.

Preferred

  • Experience with Oracy and cross-curricular collaboration.
  • Leadership experience in a school setting.
  • Experience in curriculum development and departmental management.
