The Opportunity:

As the Head of English Department, you will lead and inspire a team of dedicated educators, shaping the curriculum and ensuring excellence in English teaching across all key stages. This is a pivotal role in driving academic success and fostering a love of literature and language in students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the English department, ensuring a high-quality, inclusive curriculum that meets the needs of all students.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student achievement and engagement in English.
  • Support and mentor English teachers, providing professional development and guidance.
  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate cross-curricular themes and enhance student learning.
  • Monitor and evaluate teaching and learning, using data to inform decision-making and drive improvement.
  • Represent the English department in school-wide meetings and external events.
  • Ensure the effective use of resources and technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Promote a positive and inclusive school culture that supports the wellbeing of students and staff.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven leadership experience in a school or college setting, ideally within a subject department.
  • Strong subject knowledge in English, with experience in teaching across key stages.
  • Experience in curriculum development and assessment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and student wellbeing.
  • Ability to manage and motivate a team effectively.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading departmental initiatives or whole-school projects.
  • Experience with Catholic values or faith-based education.
  • Experience in leading or supporting professional development for teachers.
  • Experience with data analysis and performance monitoring.
  • Experience in school improvement or Ofsted inspection processes.
