The Opportunity:

The Head of English Department will lead and manage the English department, including a specific subject area, and contribute to the development of cross-college literature skills. This role is ideal for an experienced educator passionate about inspiring students and shaping the future of English education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead the English department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all key stages.
  • Oversee the strategic development and implementation of the department’s curriculum and teaching practices.
  • Provide leadership and support to departmental staff, including mentoring and professional development.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, ensuring that all students reach their full potential.
  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate cross-college literature skills into the timetable.
  • Represent the department at senior management meetings and contribute to college-wide initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, safeguarding procedures, and Ofsted standards.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion, respect, and academic excellence throughout the department.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified teacher with a relevant degree and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Proven experience in leading a department or subject area within a sixth form college or similar setting.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to inspire and motivate staff and students.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Preferred

  • Experience in developing and leading curriculum innovation within English education.
  • Familiarity with cross-curricular initiatives and collaborative working across departments.
  • Experience with teaching a specific subject within the English department, such as English Literature or Language.
  • Knowledge of current educational trends and best practices in sixth form education.
