The Opportunity:

As the Head of English (Secondary), you will lead and inspire a dynamic department, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality curriculum aligned with the English National Curriculum. This is an opportunity to shape the academic direction of the department and support student success through innovative teaching and leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and develop the English department to ensure it achieves the highest standards of excellence.
  • Create and monitor the subject curriculum and schemes of work across the secondary school.
  • Analyze assessments and use data to improve teaching, learning, and student attainment.
  • Ensure high-quality reports are provided to parents in line with whole school expectations.
  • Select appropriate external examination courses and manage departmental performance.
  • Allocate staff timetables and promote collaboration across the school.
  • Observe lessons, coach, and mentor staff to support professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and implement relevant policies.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Minimum 2 years of full-time teaching experience in the UK or a British Curriculum school.
  • Strong knowledge of the National Curriculum for England and current assessment practices.
  • Experience with data systems, student tracking, intervention, and reporting.
  • Commitment to outstanding teaching and learning practices.
  • Ability to establish strong partnerships with parents and collaborate on whole school initiatives.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading a department or team.
  • Background in teacher training or pastoral care.
  • Experience in developing and implementing new educational programs.
  • Fluency in English and experience with English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching.
