The Opportunity:

As the Head of Modern Foreign Languages, you will lead the department and play a key role in shaping the academic and co-curricular experience of students. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and visionary teacher to contribute to a school that values innovation and excellence in education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the Modern Foreign Languages department, including overseeing the performance and development of all MFL staff.
  • Develop and review schemes of work for one of French, German, or Spanish, ensuring alignment with the school’s academic standards.
  • Manage and support pupils in the department, promoting high academic achievement and effective use of tracking data.
  • Oversee the administration of the department, including the development of the department handbook and ensuring readiness for inspection.
  • Contribute to the pastoral care of students and support their academic and personal development.
  • Participate in co-curricular activities and contribute to the school’s broader educational mission.
  • Attend staff meetings, training sessions, parents’ evenings, and other school functions as required.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, and equal opportunities.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven ability to teach French, Spanish, or German to A Level.
  • Ability to teach a second language at least to Key Stage 3.
  • Outstanding subject knowledge and academic qualifications.
  • Experience in leading or managing an academic department.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organisational, administrative, and IT skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and student welfare.

Preferred

  • Experience in both the maintained and independent sectors.
  • Ability to inspire and lead by example.
  • Experience in contributing to co-curricular activities.
  • Demonstrated success in developing innovative teaching methods.
