The Opportunity:

The Head of Science Department will lead a dynamic and successful team, driving excellence in science education and promoting STEM engagement both within the school and beyond. This role is ideal for an experienced and visionary leader who can shape the future of science teaching and learning during a transformative period in the school’s history.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing Science Department across all year groups and subjects.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance teaching, learning, and academic achievement in science.
  • Coordinate curriculum design and pedagogy, ensuring alignment with the school’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Promote STEM engagement through outreach, partnerships, and co-curricular activities.
  • Support and oversee the work of departmental technicians and other staff.
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety standards in science teaching and laboratories.
  • Collaborate with Heads of Department to ensure consistent and high-quality teaching across all science subjects.
  • Engage with educational research and respond to curriculum developments as the school transitions to full co-education.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience teaching science subjects at all key stages up to KS5.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a school or educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of CLEAPSS guidance and health and safety procedures in science education.
  • Excellent organisational, administrative, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to promoting science and STEM within the school and wider educational community.

Preferred

  • Experience in curriculum development and pedagogical innovation.
  • Familiarity with co-educational environments and the transition to full co-education.
  • Experience with extracurricular science initiatives, such as Olympiads, competitions, and outreach programmes.
  • Strong understanding of inclusive education and equity in science teaching.
