The Opportunity:

As a Special Needs Lecturer, you will play a key role in supporting students with SEND, helping them build confidence, independence, and the skills needed for adulthood. This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of learners while working in a highly supportive and specialist environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver motivating, inclusive, and inspiring sessions in your specialist subject to students with a wide range of needs and abilities.
  • Act as a subject lead, contributing to curriculum development and identifying training opportunities within the department.
  • Participate in initial and diagnostic assessments and contribute to the setting and review of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Serve as a personal tutor, supporting students in their progression and transition towards adulthood.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and contribute to quality assurance processes and inspections.
  • Collaborate with the wider team, including Student Services and curriculum areas, to ensure learners receive appropriate support.
  • Develop links with external partners, employers, and local communities, and support student trips and work placements.
  • Utilise assistive technologies and new learning tools to enhance access and engagement for learners.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • A relevant teaching qualification at Level 4 or above, or commitment to achieving one within 2 years.
  • A specialist qualification in your subject area (e.g., English, maths, catering, dance, sport, music, or horticulture).
  • Relevant experience teaching students with Learning Difficulties or Disabilities.
  • Experience teaching your specialist subject to students with Learning Difficulties or Disabilities.
  • Ability to offer pastoral guidance and support to students.
  • Knowledge of foundation level curricula.
  • Understanding of disability legislation and policies, including Education Health and Care Plans.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to liaise with families and external partners.
  • Computer literacy and willingness to use new media and assistive technologies.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity, inclusion, and safeguarding.

Preferred

  • A specialist LLDD qualification.
  • A degree-level qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Relevant teaching experience with adults or 14-18 year olds.
  • Experience working with students with autism and general learning disabilities.
  • Experience working with students with profound and complex disabilities.
  • Knowledge of assistive technologies.
  • First aid training.
  • Experience working with external partners.
