The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Subject Leader English to lead and develop the English and Media department at a specialist SEN school. This is a key leadership role with the opportunity to shape the curriculum and support staff in delivering high-quality teaching to students across all ability levels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the English and Media department, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Develop and implement a curriculum that meets the needs of students with complex learning disabilities and difficulties.
  • Support and mentor teaching staff in the delivery of basic skills such as phonics and reading.
  • Work collaboratively with other subject leaders and the Middle Leadership Team to drive whole-school initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, ensuring consistent achievement across all levels of qualification.
  • Promote a culture of reading among both students and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the school’s educational and pastoral programmes.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified teacher with experience in teaching English.
  • Experience of working with students with complex learning disabilities and difficulties.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement effective teaching strategies for SEN students.
  • Understanding of SEN and the barriers to learning.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading a subject department.
  • Experience with a range of qualifications from Entry Level to GCSE and A-Level.
  • Experience in developing reading and literacy programmes.
  • Experience with whole-school initiatives and leadership roles.
