The Opportunity:

The Assistant Head (Pastoral and Wellbeing) will play a vital role in promoting student welfare and ensuring a positive school culture. This position offers the chance to lead and shape a supportive environment that empowers students and staff alike.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and develop the pastoral care system to ensure the wellbeing of all pupils.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Leadership Team and Pastoral Leads to implement effective support strategies.
  • Deliver high-quality pastoral support and guidance to students, parents, and staff.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Lead and support staff in fostering a nurturing and inclusive school environment.
  • Chair meetings and communicate effectively with stakeholders including parents, pupils, and colleagues.
  • Develop and implement initiatives that promote student mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of pastoral care practices across the school.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in pastoral roles within a school setting.
  • Experience as a Designated Senior Person (DSP) or DSL with up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding best practice.
  • Strong classroom experience and a track record of successful teaching.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
  • Strong leadership and team-building abilities.
  • High level of organisational and time management skills.
  • Commitment to promoting a positive and inclusive school culture.

Preferred

  • Experience in staff development and training.
  • Experience in curriculum development or pastoral policy creation.
  • Knowledge of mental health and wellbeing strategies in education.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to whole-school improvement initiatives.
