The Opportunity:

As an Assistant Head Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the school, leading a team and delivering high-quality education to primary-aged children with autism. This is a leadership position that combines teaching and strategic planning, with a focus on creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support a team of staff, promoting professional development and effective teaching practices.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across the primary age range, with a particular focus on PSHE and inclusive education.
  • Develop and implement a curriculum that is accessible, engaging, and tailored to the needs of pupils with autism and additional needs.
  • Foster a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages pupil engagement and achievement.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head Teacher to set the vision and direction of the school.
  • Support pupils in managing challenging behaviours through understanding and applying autism-specific strategies.
  • Ensure the use of communication tools such as PECs, PODD, and Makaton to support non-verbal pupils.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion, respect, and safety for all pupils and staff.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with primary teaching experience.
  • Proven experience of teaching across the primary age range.
  • Strong knowledge of PSHE and inclusive education practices.
  • Previous leadership experience, either as an Assistant Head Teacher or in a middle leadership role.
  • Experience working with pupils who are autistic and have additional needs such as ADHD and dyslexia.
  • Understanding of autism strategies and inclusive practices.

Preferred

  • Experience working with non-verbal pupils using communication tools such as PECs and PODD.
  • Knowledge of autism-specific approaches such as TEACCH and Attention Autism.
  • Experience in developing bespoke and accessible curricula for pupils with complex needs.
