Summary:

Teaching Assistant job opportunity with a school dedicated to supporting children with autism and SEMH needs.

The Opportunity:

As a Teaching Assistant, you will support children with autism and social, emotional, and mental health needs. Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with autism and SEMH needs during lessons and activities
  • Assist in developing individualised learning plans and implementing strategies for communication and behaviour management
  • Communicate effectively with students using visual aids, Makaton, and other tools
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and therapists to support student progress
  • Provide positive reinforcement and encouragement to students to help them achieve their goals
  • Help manage challenging behaviour using understanding and supportive techniques
  • Deliver engaging and accessible lessons using a range of teaching tools and resources
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and positive learning environment for all students

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Previous experience working with children who are autistic and have social, emotional, and mental health needs
  • Ability to communicate effectively with non-verbal students using visual aids such as Makaton, PECs, and PODD
  • Experience working with students who display challenging behaviour and an understanding of the function of behaviour
  • Flexibility to work with children aged 4 through to 11 years old
  • Ability to think creatively and deliver bespoke, accessible lessons

Preferred

  • Awareness of autism strategies such as TEACCH and Attention Autism
  • Experience using PODD and other communication tools in practice
  • Previous classroom experience or willingness to undertake relevant training
  • Enthusiasm for supporting teachers and working closely with therapists
