The Opportunity:
As an Assistant Headteacher – Pastoral, you will lead and develop the school’s pastoral systems, ensuring every pupil is supported to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. This is a highly visible leadership role requiring warmth, clarity, and a strong sense of purpose.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of pastoral care, wellbeing, behaviour, and safeguarding
- Develop and embed a strong, consistent pastoral culture across the school
- Lead, mentor, and support Heads of Year, Form Tutors, and pastoral staff
- Work closely with families, staff, and external agencies to support pupil welfare
- Oversee attendance, behaviour, and inclusion strategies
- Contribute to staff training and professional development in pastoral and safeguarding matters
- Play a full role in the wider leadership and life of the school
Qualifications & Skills:
Required
- Proven experience in a senior pastoral leadership role
- Strong knowledge of safeguarding, pastoral systems, and behaviour management
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- The ability to lead with empathy, consistency, and authority
- A collaborative, solution-focused approach to leadership
- A commitment to the values and broader life of an independent school
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Preferred
- Experience in a senior leadership role within an independent school
- Experience with pastoral care strategies and student wellbeing initiatives
- Experience in managing and developing pastoral staff
- Experience in working with external agencies and families
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive salary up to £43,635
- Management allowance between £8,500-£10,000
