The Opportunity:

As an Emotional Barriers to School Attendance Mentor, you will provide vital support to students facing emotional and psychological challenges that impact their attendance. This role is crucial in helping students re-engage with learning, build trust, and foster long-term academic and personal success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement personalised support plans for students with emotional barriers to attendance.
  • Deliver 1:1 and group interventions, including restorative practices, to help students overcome anxiety and distress.
  • Collaborate with families, external agencies, and the SENDCO to ensure holistic support for students.
  • Track and manage attendance data, ensuring timely follow-up and intervention strategies.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students to encourage re-engagement with school.
  • Work as part of a team of mentors, contributing to a collaborative and supportive approach.
  • Support students in achieving academic success while prioritising their emotional wellbeing.
  • Ensure all interventions align with the school’s core values of Co-operation, Ambition, Respect, and Empathy.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Experience working with students experiencing school anxiety or emotional distress.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, families, and external agencies.
  • A compassionate, relational approach to supporting vulnerable students.
  • High levels of empathy, patience, and resilience.
  • Ability to manage attendance data and implement effective follow-up strategies.
  • Organised and efficient with the ability to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.

Preferred

  • Experience in a school or similar setting with students facing complex emotional needs.
  • Experience in developing and delivering restorative practices or similar interventions.
  • Familiarity with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) support frameworks.
  • Experience in working with young people in a mentoring or pastoral role.
