The Opportunity:

As a Facilities Maintenance Officer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the school remains safe, compliant, and well-maintained. This position involves a wide range of responsibilities, from health and safety checks to general maintenance and grounds upkeep. Your work will directly impact the learning environment and the well-being of students, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out statutory and routine checks including weekly fire alarm tests, monthly emergency lighting checks, and daily water temperature monitoring.
  • Maintain accurate records of all compliance checks and ensure they meet regulatory requirements.
  • Perform basic DIY repairs such as fixing door handles, replacing bulbs, and minor plumbing fixes.
  • Identify maintenance issues early and take proactive steps to resolve them.
  • Support deep-cleaning tasks and ensure the school is tidy, safe, and presentable at all times.
  • Maintain outdoor areas including pathways, playgrounds, and green spaces through weeding, sweeping, and general upkeep.
  • Open and close the school site as required, ensuring security and safety during all hours.
  • Support room setups for events, meetings, and school activities.
  • Manage your own workload and prioritise tasks effectively, working independently when needed.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Experience in general maintenance, caretaking, or facilities work.
  • Good practical skills (DIY, basic plumbing, basic electrical awareness).
  • Ability to carry out statutory checks and maintain accurate records.
  • Basic IT skills, including the use of Microsoft Office (especially Excel).
  • Proactive, organised, and able to work independently.
  • Good communication and people skills.
  • Reliable, trustworthy, and able to take responsibility for site security.
  • Physically able to carry out manual tasks (lifting, carrying, ladder work).
  • Willingness to undertake cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks.

Preferred

  • Experience working in a school or educational setting.
  • Understanding of Health & Safety requirements in a school or similar environment.
  • Knowledge of compliance requirements (fire safety, Legionella, COSHH).
  • Experience liaising with contractors.
  • First aid training (or willingness to undertake training).
  • Full UK driving licence (especially if combining with the minibus driver role).
