The Opportunity:

As Head of History, you will lead a dynamic and high-performing department, driving curriculum development and fostering a culture of excellence. This role offers the chance to shape the future of history education and inspire students to engage deeply with the past and its relevance to the modern world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support the development of a high-quality history curriculum across all key stages.
  • Collaborate closely with the Head of History to drive departmental strategy and ensure consistent standards.
  • Mentor and support colleagues, promoting best practice in teaching and learning.
  • Deliver engaging and impactful lessons that spark curiosity and critical thinking.
  • Organise and lead enrichment activities, including trips, events, and guest speakers.
  • Encourage student participation in historical competitions and themed events.
  • Monitor and evaluate student progress, ensuring all learners achieve their potential.
  • Contribute to the wider school community through collaboration and shared leadership.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience in leading a history department at a secondary level.
  • Strong track record in raising standards across all key stages and ability ranges.
  • Excellent subject knowledge and the ability to deliver inspiring and engaging lessons.
  • Experience in curriculum development and departmental leadership.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to mentor and support colleagues.

Preferred

  • Experience in leading or contributing to enrichment and extra-curricular history programmes.
  • Experience with cross-curricular initiatives or pastoral support.
  • Familiarity with assessment and data analysis in history education.
  • Experience in a multi-academy trust or similar educational setting.
