The Opportunity:

As the Head of Music, you will lead a vibrant and successful department, shaping the academic and co-curricular music program across all key stages. This role offers the opportunity to inspire students, collaborate with other performing arts disciplines, and lead a dedicated team of musicians. You will play a key role in maintaining the school’s strong music heritage while driving innovation and excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the academic music department, including curriculum development and staff supervision.
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across key stages, including A Level, and support the development of music across the school.
  • Oversee and enhance co-curricular music activities, including formal concerts, informal recitals, and external festivals.
  • Direct and support instrumental and vocal ensembles in rehearsals and performances.
  • Collaborate with the drama department to provide musical support for productions.
  • Accompany pupil performances and Choral Concert Choir rehearsals as a confident pianist.
  • Develop students’ musical understanding through improvisation and creative teaching methods.
  • Work closely with a team of peripatetic musicians to deliver individual and group tuition.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Proven experience as a Head of Music or in a senior leadership role within a music department.
  • Strong teaching experience across all key stages, including A Level.
  • Confident pianist with the ability to accompany and improvise.
  • Experience in directing instrumental and vocal ensembles.
  • Ability to manage and lead a team of academic and peripatetic music staff.
  • Commitment to co-curricular and performance-based music programs.

Preferred

  • Experience in a co-educational setting.
  • Background in music education or related field.
  • Experience in school leadership or management.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills.
  • Passion for fostering student creativity and musical development.
