Head of Music - TLR 2b (£5990) – lead a dynamic music department and inspire students through excellence in teaching and performance.

The Opportunity:

As the Head of Music, you will lead a vibrant and ambitious music curriculum for students aged 11–18, ensuring a balanced approach to academic and practical music-making. This is an opportunity to shape a curriculum that values creativity, performance, and cultural understanding, while inspiring students to reach their full potential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver a high-quality, inclusive music curriculum aligned with the Model Music Curriculum and National Plan for Music Education.
  • Lead and support a team of music teachers, promoting excellence in teaching and learning across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.
  • Ensure students gain confidence in performing, composing and listening, with opportunities for both academic and vocational pathways.
  • Enhance extracurricular opportunities, including ensemble performance, concerts, and community partnerships.
  • Foster a culture where music is central to the school’s identity and student experience.
  • Promote the value of music in developing creativity, collaboration, and independent thinking.
  • Monitor and improve student outcomes at GCSE, BTEC and Post-16 levels.
  • Stay up to date with developments in music education and integrate innovative teaching methods and technologies.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required

  • Qualified teacher with experience in delivering music at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5.
  • Proven track record of securing strong outcomes at GCSE, BTEC and Post-16 level.
  • Strong knowledge of current developments in music education and curriculum innovation.
  • Excellent communication, leadership and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to inclusive education and supporting students from all backgrounds.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate both students and colleagues.

Preferred

  • Experience in curriculum design and development.
  • Knowledge of musical technology and contemporary teaching approaches.
  • Experience in leading and developing extracurricular music activities.
  • Experience in working with students with special educational needs.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to music productions and performances.
